(A big shipping/transporting company asked me to change the name of the page and the ship, as "I wasn't allowed to use their name on my pages" - I don't have easy access to a lawyer, so I had to comply - I suppose they didn't like 'The Sinking of ...' to turn up as a top hit when you did a web search on the name of their biggest tanker! If you're really interested, you can see the name on the model itself, at least on the old picture)

The sinking of Regina M....k - version 2.0

These ray-traces were done with POVRay. The ships were made with BlockCAD, after models in my old Lego idea book. After saving in Ldraw-format, the model file was converted to POVRay with Lars Hassings L3P. The lettered blocks were made by Tore Eriksson.

This picture is the result of much searching and experimenting. Finally I found a tutorial for water in POV-Ray, by Michael Hough (note url changed to more correct one 98-12-14).

The water is a combination of Michael's method, which gives beautiful ripple waves, but is a flat plane, and my own method with a height field, to give the effect of real rolling waves (well, sort of...). You can se the line where the height field ends, just below the horizon. I'm still not satisfied with it, we'll see what can be done...

I have also upgraded my computer since the first picture, but since I made this one in 800x600 resolution, and there are more to do with the smoke and all, the rendering time was much longer.

Approximate rendering time on PII, 450 MHz - 87 minutes.

You can compare it to the previous version, where the water is much more like a swimming pool.

The sinking of Regina M....k - first version

Approximate rendering time on PII, 266 MHz - 43 minutes.
